Not My Babies!!

No, not any real babies - my cards. I just started making cards in the summer, and while I hadn't planned for them to live with me forever, parting with them is so hard! There are cards I've made for specific people; I don't mind giving them up. It's the cards that I made just because I loved an image or wanted to try a technique that I have a problem handing over. Last week, my bf asked me to make some cards for people at his job. (First commission gig!!) I made extra cards but gave him the option to pick from all of the winter-y/Christmas cards I've ever made. Some of the ones he picked were my favorites, and I'm sad that I'll never be able to go to hold them again.  :)  Is this just me? Do you ever make cards that you love so much you want to keep?

So, one of the cards I made especially for him that he picked is this one:

The digi stamp is Holly the Christmas Friendship Fairy from Michelle Perkett Studio. She's colored with Copics and outlined with colored pencil + OMS. There are a gang of Stickles, but I don't know what colors they are. I got the multipack of big bottles from Michaels, but they don't have any name or other indicator of color on them. (Help me out. They're both white in the bottle. One has gold glitter; the other has blue. The other one from the pack has green glitter.) The little pearls just arrived the other day as part of a Christmas present from my friend Theresa... I really like how this card came out and hope you do too!

  1. THis is lovely, Trina , so soft and pretty. :-)and no, its not just you. We all want to keep our cards. But this is what happens: We choose to keep a card that seems so special to us at the time so we do. Six months later we can make an even NICER card and now don't want anyone to have that "special" card cos we NOW think its not good enough! lol
THis is what I do: Take a picture and save it in an online gallery like Flickr, so you can always "have" it.Then you don't mind so much giving it away.
IN saying that, I have about 75 cards sitting here on my dining room table in boxes...:-)Yesterday I went through some of them and "cannibalized" some of those very same "special cards". (didn't like em anymore)
    What fickle people we are!

  2. This is a very lovely card and I would have a hard time parting with it too. I am very careful about who I give cards that I made to. Some people in my family do not appreciate the time, energy and talent that goes into a project and the thought of them throwing one of my creations in the trash just makes me too nervous!

  3. This is gorgeous! I can't believe you just started making cards this summer, your cards are fabulous!!!
As for getting attached, I find it hard every single time I give a card away LOL! I want to keep them all myself. Taking photos and bloging them helps, because then you can look at the photos so you know you could always try to recreate it.

  4. That is a beautiful card and so angelic.
You are not alone. I sell cards that I make. Sometimes I don't want to let them go either. Sometimes because the amount of work that went into it or because it is my favorite card. I even had people want to buy a card because it was so cute & they said they would want to keep it and couldn't give it away. It is funny how we cherish what we make.

  6. Trina, I thought I was the only one. So glad to hear somebody else feels my pain...LOL. My husband asked for some cards for his co-workers. I designed some "manly" looking cards for him, thinking that was what he wanted. He took them and distributed them, then came home for lunch and asked for some of my "better" cards. "You know, the ones with all the details and ribbons and stuff". I was shocked, but I laid all my Christmas-ey cards out for him to choose from. He reached for the one I specifically made for my mother and I quickly took it out of the mix. It was definitely heart breaking, watching him make his selections. However, I felt a little better when he reported, after work, that all the teachers were jealous who didn't get one of my cards. "You'll have to make more, next year", he said. So I guess I'll start my Christmas 2011 cards right after new years!!!...Happy Holidays!

  15. Trina she is beautiful. And yes I too have a hard time parting with my treasured work.. I don't mind when someone else will love it too. But the thought that someone could just trash what I labored over for hours is hard.

But I must part with some as they are beginning to take over my craftroom. :(

  16. Gorgeous card! I don't have any issues giving the cards to those who appreciate them, but I agree...if I think they are going to trash them or be unappreciative, it's a lot harder to let them go!
